Course Description
The seminar discusses how Gilles Deleuze’s philosophical idea of hesitation of things and durée, and particularly his interpretations of Henri Bergson’s philosophical fundamentals, can be employed to explain the interaction of time and technology. Hesitation of time, in Deleuze’s words, carries a positive meaning in that it generates spaces for creation and more opportunities to be affected by things, consequently boosting the advancement of technology. By contrast, Bernard Stiegler also discusses time and technics, though in an entirely different way. For Stiegler, it is not simply technics in time but technics as time. This seminar, therefore, aims to discuss and analyze the relationship between technics and time by reading Gilles Deleuze’s and Bernard Stiegler’s theories so as to better understand how time and technics interact and interrelate with each other.

Course Objectives
This seminar aims to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of Deleuze’s and Stiegler’s philosophical thinking concerning time and its discussion on technics. It is also expected that students who take this seminar will cultivate and develop critical thinking ability and writing skills required to conduct their thesis research.
